On Tuesday, Nov. 9, the Lafayette High School Lady Hornets opened their basketball season on the road, as they traveled to the Trenton High School Pre-Season Classic. There, they took on the Class 5A Lecanto Lady Panthers, who were coming off an 18-8 record, while the Lady Hornets were coming off a 13-6 record. The Lady Hornets roster boasts three seniors, with a team full of underclassmen.
The game began with the Lady Hornets and Lady Panthers firing on all cylinders, with the Lady Hornets holding onto a 22-17 lead at the end of the first quarter. Unknown to the Lady Panthers, Haley Rosenbaum was beginning to heat up. As the second quarter began, the Hornets' defense established their dominance by more than seven points in a quarter for the remainder of the game, earning 11 points in the second quarter, 13 points in the third quarter and 17 points in the fourth quarter. The final score was 63-31, in favor of the Hornets.
Next, the Lady Hornets traveled to Trenton High School on Thursday, Nov. 11, to take on the Fort White Lady Indians in the Trenton High School Pre-Season Classic. There, the Lady Hornets were poised for another win, as they came out aggressive. However, the Lady Indians' defense did appear to keep the Lady Hornets out of sorts, managing only 10 points in the first quarter. At the same time, the Lady Hornets' defense was just as effective, holding the Lady Indians to only 10 points. Then, as the second quarter began, the Lady Hornets started to edge out the Lady Indians by the three points going into halftime.
In the second half, Lady Hornets head coach Ehrin Beach made the adjustments he felt would help his team win. As the third quarter began, the Lady Indians tried to respond, only to find themselves trailing by five points. Then, as the fourth quarter got underway, the Lady Hornets outlasted the Lady Indians down the stretch, outscoring them 11-6 to close out the game, giving the Lady Hornets their second win of the season by a score of 47-37.
The Lady Hornets will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m., as they travel to Jefferson County High School to take on the Lady Tigers. Jefferson County High School is located at 50 David Rd., in Monticello.
