The Lafayette County School Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m., in the Administration Building's school board meeting room, located at 363 N.E. Crawford St., in Mayo. Board members in attendance, were: Superintendent Robby Edwards; Darren Driver, District 1; Jeff Walker, District 2; Vice Chairwoman Marion McCray, District 3; Chairwoman Amanda Hickman, District 4 and Taylor McGrew, District 5. The meeting opened up with the invocation, led by McGrew and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Once the meeting was opened, the board moved on to recognize seven Lafayette Elementary School (LES) students for their performance on their end-of-course assessments for the 2020-21 school year. These students include third-grader Whitney Moseley, who received perfect scores on both her ELA and math assessments; third-graders Evan Wine, Adam Plummer and Christopher Hornback, who received perfect scores on their math assessments; fifth-grader Claudia Alcantar-Arriguin and Fernando Cardona, who received perfect scores on their math assessments and fifth-grader Roberto Flores Zavala, who received a perfect score on his science assessment. Each student was presented with a framed certificate for their achievements.
Next, four students were recognized for being the Students of the Month, including LES students Kenton Nickerson and Areli Espinoza Negrete and Lafayette High School (LHS) students Timothy Whistslar and Madalynn Rutherford. Each student received a special folder, certificate and a card that will admit them to all sports games for the rest of the school year.
After recognitions were made, the board went on to conduct it's regular business by adopting the agenda and approving the minutes of the previous meeting, held on Tuesday, Sept. 21. There were no consent items, so the board moved on the action items, starting with the approval of two personnel recommendations, one request for leave and one resignation.
The board then moved on to item 4.02, which was a request to advertise a revision to school board policy 3.06 regarding Safe and Secure Schools and the addition of policy 8.06 regarding Safe School Officers. This request was unanimously approved. The board then went on to hold a public hearing to approve policies 7.22 and 7.025, both of which regard Electronic Records, as previously advertised. Since no opposition from the public was made, the board went on to approve the policies.
The remainder of the action items were approved without much discussion taking place. Approved items included: appointing Councilman Walker to serve on the value adjustment board; appointing a business owner to serve on the value adjustment board, pending his approval; the operational audit report; four fundraiser requests; the 2021-22 Five-Year District Facilities Work Plan; the Florida Safe Schools Assessment Tool District assessment; the 2021-22 School Health Services Plan Amendment and the budget amendments.
Once all items were discussed and approved, the board meeting was adjourned. The next Lafayette County School Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m., in the Administration Building’s school board meeting room, located at 363 N.E. Crawford St., in Mayo.
