The Lafayette County Board of County Commissioners (LCBCC) held a regular meeting at 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8. The meeting was held in the County Commissioners Meeting Room, on the second floor of the Lafayette County Courthouse, located at 120 W Main St. in Mayo. Commissioners in attendance were: Lance Lamb, District 1; Henry McCray, District 2; Lisa Walker, District 3 and Earnest Jones, District 5.
The meeting opened up with the invocation and pledge to the flag, which were both led by Scott Sadler, director of the public works department. After the invocation and pledge to the flag, the board approved the minutes. There were no requests or comments from the community, so the meeting continued on to the section outlined for the department heads.
Marcus Calhoun, the head of the maintenance department, was unavailable, so first up was Sadler, who discussed items going on within the public works department. During his addressing of the board, Sadler mentioned tree trimming took place on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Old Hatch Bend Cemetery in an effort to maintain the entrance. Sadler also mentioned how the Toxic Round-Up event, which was held on Saturday, Feb. 6, was well attended, even though the weekend was a wet one. The final thing Sadler brought up was the retirement of Tommy Factor, who has been a garbage truck driver in Lafayette County for the last 15 years. Factor retired on Friday, Jan. 29 and Sadler requested they pay Factor for his remaining vacation time and his 240 hours of sick leave, as per their policy. The LCBCC approved this request.
Garret Land, head of the building and zoning departments, was up next with a request for the LCBCC to perform the first reading of an ordinance amending section 14.3.4 of the land development regulations. This ordinance relates to the expiration of building permits and specifying fees to reopen lapsed permits. The ordinance will be read a second time at the next meeting.
Marty Tompkins, department head of emergency medical services, was unavailable and Shawn Jackson, Director of the Lafayette County UF/IFAS Extension Office, had no comments.
The meeting then went into discussion of the COVID-19 declaration, which the board approved to continue. There were no additional items for discussion, nor any items under "other business" or "future agenda items" to go over. After bills were approved for payment, the meeting was adjourned.
A LCBCC was also held on Monday, Feb. 22, at 5:30 p.m. in the County Commissioners Meeting Room on the second floor of the Lafayette County Courthouse, located at 120 W Main St. in Mayo. Stay tuned for coverage on the Feb. 22 meeting.
