The town council of White Springs held a regular council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall council chambers, located at 10363 Bridge St. in White Springs. In attendance, were: Nicole Williams, Jaclyn Williams, Anita Rivers and various department representatives.
During the meeting, the town council discussed various items, including the building and placement of a community center/emergency shelter. According to Joel Foreman, the town council's attorney, there would be an issue with the original location of the building when it comes to emergency situations. Due to the small street, traffic flow would pose a significant challenge in the future and could require the repaving of the road. After discussing the issue brought forth by Foreman, the council decided to change the location of the community center/emergency shelter to the location of the old water plant.
In addition, it was mentioned how, for unspecified reasons, resignations were received for the entire White Springs police department. It was also mentioned how the town council is a thousand dollars over their previous budget.
Later, during the report from the volunteer fire department, the town council was informed one of the volunteers, Stephanie Lane, is currently attending med school in Lake City to advance her knowledge and ability to serve her community. She is anticipated to graduate in April.
During the section outlined for "old business," a request made by the Hope and Heritage Coalition to lease the historic Carver School, a historic school which housed all 12 grades for the children of the White Springs black community, was read. The coalition requested to lease the building and property for $10 per year, which would allow the group to seek grants and funds to turn the Carver School into a museum and community outreach center. After extensive discussion took place, a motion was made and subsequently approved for the council to get in contact with the Hope and Heritage Coalition for more information.
A special workshop is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall chambers, located at 10363 Bridge St. in White Springs.
