The Lafayette High School (LHS) Hornets' boys’ varsity soccer team was named District Champions after their 6-2 win over the Wolves of Saint Francis Catholic Academy (SFCA) on Monday, Feb. 8, during the final game of the 2021 Boys Soccer District Championship at Oak Hall School in Gainesville.
Although they were down in the first half, Assistant Coach Josue Licea attributes the team's win to the aggressiveness and grit of each player which allowed the creation of goal opportunities. They were able to build up this momentum by the end of the first half and keep it going into the second half, where they began to dominate.
This win comes at the end of seniors Quentin Sutley (#16) and Emmanuel Tovar's (#4) final year.
With this year being as tough as it is, Licea says everyone is looking for something to hold onto. "The community has been super supportive and there have been bigger crowds than usual," he said. "We're trying to build something memorable for the community."
The Hornets' win comes after making it to two state playoffs in a row. "Everyone's hoping to make it farther and farther each year," Licea said. Until Monday, it had been around eight years since reaching the final round of the playoffs.
