Suwannee County School District (SCSD) crowned the Suwannee County District Spelling Bee winner on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the SCSD office, in Live Oak. Bradley Harrison, of Suwannee Riverside Elementary, out-spelled several other students in an hour long spelling bee.
The competition kicked off at 9 a.m. and consisted of eight spellers: Jiarys "Marina" Hernandez, from Suwannee Middle School; Kimberly Tanner, of Suwannee Pineview Elementary; Elenea Garcia, of Branford Elementary School; Isabella "Bella" Hobday, of Branford High School; Bradley Harrison, of Suwannee Riverside Elementary; Camron Wilson, of Westwood Christian School; Malina Shearer, of Melody Christian Academy and Alex Gonzalez, of Suwannee Springcrest Elementary. The competition was close and it took many rounds to finally get to the last three standing. The winning word that launched Harrison towards the regional spelling bee was "encore." First runner-up was awarded to Wilson and Hernandez was awarded second runner-up.
Harrison will represent his school district at the 77th annual First Coast Regional Spelling Championship in March, either in person or by virtual video, due to coronavirus safety measures.
