Allen Ray Buchanan, 87, of Mayo, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021, at the Suwannee Emergency Center in Live Oak, Fla.
Ray was born Aug. 8, 1933, in Mayo to Allen Augustus Buchanan and Osie Mae Turlington Buchanan. He served in the United States Army reaching the rank of Corporal. He was of the Church of Christ faith and a member of Spring Warrior Church of Christ near Perry. He farmed most of his life, raising hogs, cows and chickens, but also owned and operated several businesses as well. He was a bulldozer operator, operated the Bay/Chevron/Standard Oil Filling Stations, ran a sawmill and drove a school bus. He was an active member of the community serving as a town council member, school board member, county commissioner, youth baseball coach and played the guitar and sang in "The Pickers" band. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He will be remembered by his children as a wonderful father and great man. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Gus and Mae Buchanan and his wife of 59 years, Louise Buchanan.
He is survived by two daughters, Milly Markle, of Perry and Tammy Tucker and husband, Randall, of Lake City; three sons: Jesse Dorsey and wife Angie, of Charleston, S.C.; Tommy Dorsey and wife Diane, of Mayo and Heath Buchanan, of Mayo; one sister, Liza Black, of Williston; a brother, Buddy Buchanan, and wife Stella, of Mayo; as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, at Burns Funeral Home of Mayo with Bro. John Zelner and Bro. Eric Russell officiating. Interment services followed in Northside Church of Christ Cemetery. All arrangements were under the care of Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
