On Friday, Jan. 8, the Lafayette High School Hornets and Lady Hornets basketball teams traveled over to Madison for a triple-header with the Cowboys and Cowgirls of Madison County High School. By the end of the evening, the Cowboys and Cowgirls had completed a sweep of the Hornets and Lady Hornets.
The action began with the boys’ junior varsity teams going head-to-head. The Cowboys went out to an early lead and at the end of the first quarter, the Cowboys had a 15-6 advantage. The Cowboys kept that lead through the second period and carried a 28-13 lead into halftime. The Cowboys began the third quarter with a 21-0 run and by the time the final quarter began, the Cowboys had a commanding 54-17 lead. The Hornets were held scoreless through the final quarter and the final score was 67-17.
Next, the girls took the court for a contest between the varsity Lady Hornets and the varsity Cowgirls. The Cowgirls opened the game with a 9-0 run before the Lady Hornets closed the gap with a 9-0 run of their own late in the first quarter. The score was a close 12-9, in favor of the Cowgirls at the end of the first period. The Cowgirls opened their lead during the second period and the score was 32-16 at halftime. During the third period, the Lady Hornets were able to somewhat keep pace with the Cowgirls, who still held a 42-23 lead after three quarters. The Cowgirls opened their lead again as the game clock dwindled down. The final score was 50-25, in favor of the Cowgirls.
In the final game of the evening between the two varsity boys teams, the Cowboys started the contest with a 9-0 run and the first quarter ended with the Cowboys ahead, 14-2. During the second quarter, the Cowboys opened their lead further and the score was 35-16 as the first half closed. During the third quarter, the Cowboys took control and had a 40-point, 62-22 lead going into the final quarter. The final period went quickly with a "running clock." The game ended with the Cowboys ahead, 74-30.
The next home game for the Hornets will be a rematch with the Cowboys of Madison County High School on Friday, Jan. 22. The action will begin with the boys junior varsity at 5 p.m. Next will be the girls varsity at 6:30 p.m. The competition will wrap up at 7:30 p.m. when the Hornets face the Cowboys.
