A health advisory has been issued by the Florida Department of Health in Hamilton County (DOH-Hamilton) for residents and visitors near the Withlacoochee River in North Florida following a wastewater overflow in Valdosta, Ga., that has caused E. coli bacteria levels in the river to exceed the safety threshold of 235 MPN/100mL.
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid contact with the affected water, including swimming and fishing. Exposure to contaminated water can lead to health risks, including gastrointestinal issues and other conditions, especially for children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
DOH-Hamilton is collaborating with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Suwannee River Water Management District to assess and monitor the situation. Water sampling and testing along the river are planned to take place along the Withlacoochee River to determine the extent of bacterial contamination.
In the meantime, officials recommend that anyone who comes into contact with the river wash thoroughly, especially before eating or drinking. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
