I'm writing this column on Friday, Oct. 11. By the time it is published, Columbus Day will have been celebrated on Monday, Oct. 14. When I was in elementary school, we learned a little rhyme to help us remember the year Christopher Columbus landed in the New World: "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." We knew which oceans he sailed and where he landed because we took Geography. We could spell it using a little acronym that always brought laughter:
G - George
E - Eats
O - Old
G - Greasy
R - Rice
A - At
P - Paul's
H - House
Y - Yesterday
