A new cookbook is now available featuring recipes from one of Branford's famous restaurateurs. "A Taste of Nell's" is now available on Amazon for around $20.
Nell's Kitchen once stood at 403 SW Suwannee Avenue in Branford, but is now occupied by Our Place Pizzeria and Ristorante. Wynelle "Nell" Lewis opened the restaurant in 1970, making it the first restaurant with a buffet in the tri-county area of North Florida. The cookbook was put together by Malynn Livingston, Nell's granddaughter. Livingston says it actually started out as a Christmas gift from her to her grandmother, but, unfortunately, Nell got sick before it was ever completed.
Now, the cookbook is available for everyone to purchase on Amazon for approximately $20 before shipping. "A Taste of Nell's" will also be available locally next week at Main Street Station and Once Upon A Time in Branford and Livingston will be setting up a table on Saturday, Dec. 12, during the town's Suwannee Avenue Street Market event. The book features over 50 recipes, personal notes and history of "Nell's." Livingston says, because her grandmother was always making sure those in her community were taken care of, she will be taking a percentage of the money attained to donate locally to those in need. Another percentage will be donated to "Keep The Fellowship," an organization in Kenya which has weekly fellowship and offers ways to fight poverty in their community. The organization distributes food and even helps people get jobs.
"I've been extremely grateful for all the support and love," Livingston says. "Within the first week, Nana's book was number 59 in Holiday cooking and entertainment. It was also in the 4,000's out of 33 million books on Amazon. Those numbers are updated hourly. It's at 62,472 right now, which is still amazing to me! People from all over are not only getting a taste of Nana's cooking but a piece of my heart, too."
