Around the Banks

I am writing this column on Friday, June 21. Yesterday was officially the longest day of the year. Summer is here, no doubt about it. When Daddy and Uncle Warren grew tobacco ,and we went into the fields after lunch, it would be so hot and humid that if you got a breath of air, you stole it.
This time of year, many of the fruits and vegetables in our area are at their sweetest and best. Seemingly simple things make me happy: the blueberries, blackberries and vibrant sunflowers at Rooney Farms in Suwannee County; the gorgeous heirloom tomatoes I purchased at KCs Produce in Lake City to make a tomato sandwich, and some colored butterbeans there. I love them.
