Communities join together to remember those lost

Memorial Day was created after the Civil War, and was originally called “Decoration Day.” It was meant to recognize all the soldiers lives lost during the bloodiest American war. Over time it expanded to memorialize all American soldiers who had lost their lives throughout the different wars which the U.S. has fought. It was officially recognized for the first time in 1971. Since then, many have been confused as to what Memorial Day is for. Some consider it the unofficial kick off to summer, some consider it a nice three day weekend off of work.
