Squalls of thunderstorms with gusts upward of 100 miles per hour swept across North Florida on Friday, May 10, toppling trees, downing power lines, damaging structures and causing at least one death in Leon County.
The storm also spawned several tornadoes, with the National Weather Service (NWS) confirming at least two of them touching down in the capital city.
The reported death was a Tallahassee woman whose family home had a tree fall on it. Across the region, many schools, businesses and government offices closed because of the severe weather, including Florida State University and Florida A&M University.
