Earl Victory Mills is a well-known name throughout Suwannee County. Newspapers all over have interviewed him over the years, as he was a modern day superhero. He was born in Live Oak on April 26, 1921. He was the youngest of four children and grew up on the family farm. In November 1940, Mills enlisted in the U.S. Army and by June 1943, he was assigned to the Headquarters Company of the 502nd Airborne Parachute Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, better known as “The Screaming Eagles.” A year later, Mills found himself in one of the most pivotal battles of World War II when he jumped out of a plane over Normandy, France, on D-D
